Day 127: Ghent

Or, if you are Flemish: Gent.

A city Jacquie and I visited all too briefly. One lovely July evening during Ghent Fest, which seemed to be a music festival that had bands playing all over town. We were enchanted and my father and I each bought a traditional strop (noose) to wear around our necks:
[Emperor Charles V] punished the city after the 1539 Revolt of Ghent and obliged the city's nobles to walk in front of the emperor barefoot with a noose (Dutch: strop) around the neck; since this incident, the people of Ghent have been called "Stroppendragers" (noose bearers). (wikipedia)
 I still have mine somewhere.
