The Blue star is from the "Home and Community" activity area.
As a leader I think this is the most important activity area. I really feel that amongst all the things we are teaching these cubs, being a responsible member of the community is the one needed most today.
Kids get a lot of coaching, mentoring and examples of leadership, self-confidence, life skills, and even outdoor skills from a variety of sources. What does not seem to be as popular is the exposure to ideals of service and taking responsibility for your own actions. What few seem willing to teach is that sense of fairness and decency reflected in the simple things like learning to wait your turn or doing things for others with neither thanks nor reward.
Maybe I'm projecting my biases onto the program here but I think that Cubs (ages 8-10) is the best chance we have to take kids who think that the world owes them obedience and try to make them see that they are a part of something bigger than themselves. I'll probably never know if we have succeeded but I know we have tried our best.
