What is a Campfire Blanket?

My Blanket at the beginning of this project.
Usually in the form a poncho, a campfire blanket is a wool (or sometimes synthetic fleece) blanket which keeps you warm around camp and is a handy place to display your collection of badges. Wool is preferred as it will not easily burn. Surplus army blankets are usually a good price and quality.

Patterns
There are a couple of different styles of campfire blanket:
  • Poncho - for the most common style a hole is cut in the centre of the blanket for the head. (My local council has a .doc file with a pattern and instructions for this type.)
  • Cape - a rope or other fastener holds the blanket closed across the chest.
  • Shirt - I have found some references and pictures of what is sometimes called a camp shirt which seems to be a tunic of blanket material with badges sewn all over it.
